Grilled Food Safety: The Importance of a Clean Grill πŸ”₯πŸ–

Grilling is a beloved American pastime, especially during the warm summer months. The aroma of sizzling steaks, burgers, and veggies can be tantalizing. However, ensuring the safety of the food coming off that grill is paramount. One crucial step that every grill master must never overlook is preheating and cleaning the grill before cooking.

Why is this step so vital? The answer lies in the remnants of past grilling sessions. Grills, if not cleaned properly, can retain pieces of food for extended periods. This leftover food doesn't just pose a risk of altering the taste of your next meal; it's also a potential health hazard. Birds, insects, and other critters are attracted to these food bits, and they can introduce a plethora of bacteria or even leave waste on the grill, especially if the grill top remains open.

Imagine grilling a fresh steak over the remnants of a meal cooked days or weeks ago. Not only can this lead to cross-contamination, but the bacteria thriving on those remnants can cause a range of gastrointestinal issues, from mild stomach upsets to severe food poisoning. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has highlighted an increase in food poisoning cases during summer, attributing some of these cases to outdoor grilling and the mistakes that come with it.

A common misconception among many grill enthusiasts is that the high heat from the grill will annihilate all harmful bacteria. While it's true that the flames can kill a significant amount of bacteria, they aren't foolproof. Relying solely on the grill's heat without cleaning can be a recipe for disaster. Preheating the grill not only ensures your food cooks evenly but also gives the flames ample time to work their magic on any lingering bacteria.

Cleaning your grill in the typical way, using a metal bristle brush can be dangerous. The good news is, there are several alternative methods. Today I want to share some grill cleaning safety tips with you...and recipes too!

Tons of people have recently reported injuries that have resulted from cleaning their grills with metal bristle brushes. We've been cleaning our grill with a metal bristle brush forever, and never had an issue. Many of the claims report that after cleaning their grill and cooking, they have received injuries from metal bristles that had transferred from their grill grates to their food. Those bristles were then unknowingly ingested or bitten into. Scary, right? These injuries range anywhere from lacerations to the tongue to intestinal tears and that required surgery. This article on CBS News goes into a little more detail about the injuries.
