Is 970 EVO Plus good enough? ›

Overall, the 970 EVO Plus is one of the fastest SSDs we've tested, so it easily gains our recommendation. Though at press time, the 970 EVO didn't quite outpace the competition and make our best SSDs list, it's an excellent drive and very worthy of your consideration.

In 4K reads and writes, the drive showed impressive results with 431K IOPS and 365K IOPS, respectively. Switching over to 64K reads and writes, the 970 EVO Plus showed performance of 1.12GB/s and 1.46GB/s, respectively. While latency wasn't its best in reads, the drive more than made up for it in writes.

High endurance, Intelligent TurboWrite

The 970 EVO Plus has the same high endurance rating as its predecessors, which is very high. Take the lowest capacity — the 250GB –, for example, Samsung says you can write 75 GB per day and every day to it, and the drive will still last more than five years.

Insufficient space: If the drive cannot accommodate more data in the available space, it will also cause write speeds to suffer. SSD wear: Too many writes can cause the SSD to wear out and thus affect the performance of the SSD. Firmware: The firmware on the Samsung 970 EVO Plus is outdated.

While considered an outdated piece of tech that is no longer relevant in 2023 by many consumers, the Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2 TB PCIe 3.0 SSD is now attractive once again thanks to an insane discount of almost 75%.

The 970 EVO Plus has more capacity options, up to 2TB. By contrast, the 980 only comes in 250GB, 500GB, or 1TB capacities. The 970 EVO Plus has a higher endurance rating than its counterpart (the 980), potentially increasing its lifespan and improving the user's experience overall.

The 980 is significantly faster than the 970 EVO Plus in both random and sequential 1MiB blocksize workloads—but the increase doesn't really address users where the pain lives. When we move down to 4KiB workloads, there's little to choose from between any of these drives.
