Updated on March 27, 2024 by Christina Roffe: In Stardew Valley, Mystery Boxes were introduced after the Version 1.6 update. Along with regular Mystery Boxes, there is also the chance to obtain Golden Mystery Boxes, which contain improved rewards such as Skill Books, rare seeds, armor and weapons, and more. There is a specific method that must be followed to unlock Golden Mystery Boxes, so we have updated this article to include details on how to get them. We have also included all the possible rewards you can get from Golden Mystery Boxes once you take them to the Blacksmith to be opened.

Where to Find Mystery Boxes in Stardew Valley

Mystery Boxes are a new item in Stardew Valley that can be broken open by the Blacksmith. There are a few different locations where you can get Mystery Boxes, including:

  • Found in Fishing Treasure Chests
  • Found in Mines
  • Found through digging up Artifact Spots
  • Purchased from the Calico Egg Vendor next to Harvey's clinic at the Desert Festival in Spring
  • Given as a reward for the Trout Derby festival in Summer
  • Given as a prize at the SquidFest in Winter

Mystery Boxes are quite common at the festivals introduced in Version 1.6, so if you have one coming up soon, you'll be able to get your hands on some. The easiest method, however, is to just purchase them when the Desert Festival arrives in Spring.

If you'd rather go out and find some, you can do a little bit of fishing or mining to find some Mystery Boxes. With fishing, however, the chances of getting a Mystery Box is only about 12 percent. Each method of obtaining one is random, so it will be hard to actively search for Mystery Boxes. It is better to just wait for the festivals to roll around and obtain them through these means.
